In the Garden: Planting Strawberries

Once I decided to plant fruit in both planters this year, I knew I wanted to try a different strawberry. I selected Ozark Beauties because they are supposed to grow in a more upright fashion and do well in containers like the plant you see on the right. They've also been bred against virus and afflictions like gray mold. And they too are ever-bearing, producing fruit all summer and into the fall. Don't they look plump and delicious?!

I was given The Art and Soul of Baking for my last birthday and I love it!! It focuses on the fundamentals of baking (from the school of the French masters) and extends that artistry to that nostalgic American as Apple Pie taste and Midwestern feel. Bravo! My maiden voyage: apple-gingerbread dumplings with custom cutter finishes for my own personal apple dumpling gang!

I spent some time thinking about how much I disliked the book, its popularity, and the willingness of literate, ostensibly observant people to push the burden of badness into the laps of professionals who used to include me.
